Jamar Samuels, the second-leading scorer for Kansas State, was declared ineligible Saturday, minutes before the eighth-seeded Wildcats took on top-seeded Syracuse in a East Regional round of 32 game in Pittsburgh.
Freshman Thomas Gipson started in Samuels' place. He has started 21 games and is averaging 7.0 points and 4.6 rebounds.
Athletics director John Currie, in a news conference in at training room outside the K-State locker room in the Consol Center about 20 minutes before scheduled tip-off, announced Samuels would not be playing because of an eligibility issue that had arisen in the past 24 hours.
"We are working diligently to resolve this as quickly as possible," Currie said.
He would not address whether the issue was related to academics or impermissible benefits.
Currie was not sure about Samuels' status for the rest of the tournament should the Wildcats advance.
Syracuse also is dealing with a player missing for eligibiliity reasons. Last Monday, starting center Fab Melo was declared ineligible for the entire tournament.
