Tencent, Kingsoft To Run Online Games Together - Investor's Business Daily
Mar 13th 2012, 15:42

Tencent, one of China's largest Internet portals and game operators, has reportedly tied up with Web game developer Kingsoft to start operating their online games together.

China Tech News says the two firms intend to jointly operate JX3 Online, Kingsoft's main game product. No date was given for the move, but China Tech News said it will happen "soon."

"JX3" is a 3D warrior fantasy game that has also been jointly operated by Kingsoft and Shanda Interactive Entertainment since May 2010. Shanda is one of China's best-known online game and entertainment companies. It is being taken private in a management buyout and was formally delisted from Nasdaq in February.

The growing game alliance between Tencent, whose mobile gaming platform is said to have hit 200 million registered users, and Kingsoft is stepping up competition in China's online gaming sector. The move will increase pressure on Chinese online game developers and operators such as Changyou (CYOU), NetEase (NTES) and Giant Interactive (GA). Chinese Internet portal Baidu (BIDU) is also increasingly involved in offering online games to Chinese users.

China Tech News says Tencent previously signed an investment agreement in which it took a 15.68% stake in Kingsoft. Tencent also took a strategic investment in Kingsoft's Internet security unit, Kingsoft Network. The investment cleared the way for Kingsoft's online security products to be available on Tencent's Internet platform. The two companies will also share a cloud-computing security platform.

Tencent had more than 700 million users in China as of January 2012, according to Chinese news reports.
