DDO's first expansion is on the way, and we had a chance to check out some of the upcoming content at PAX East 2012. Our journey took us into the Underdark through Drow and demon territory to the new quest hub of Eveningstar, a once tranquil rural setting now scouted, probed, and attacked by the forces of darkness.
One of the coolest new features is the inclusion of dynamic quests in Menace of the Underdark areas, quests that are randomly spawned in various areas and can feature different foes or situations. For example, players may run into a little girl that needs to be escorted through a Drow ambush - or on another excursion, that same little girl may be a hag in disguise waiting for the player to turn their back to pounce on them!
With the Drow as a large focus in Menace of the Underdark, we're happy to report the essence of the dark race is captured admirably. In fact, players will actually be deprived of their vision and have to battle through shadows when Drow forces assault them in otherwise well-lit areas.
The darkness can be removed by finding and taking out more potent Drow forces within the unit, but it provides a whole new aspect to combat that players will have to be ready for. Players will also be able to acquire racial traits and/or goggles to assist them with sight in areas such as the Underdark.
There are other huge monsters roaming about the forests of Eveningstar as well. Green Dragons make their first DDO appearance, dishing out deadly poison attacks. Poison is a key theme in Menace of the Underdark, and players will begin to fear damage-over-time in a big way as they combat Green Dragons, monstrous spiders, and Drow poison-dipped weaponry. If that wasn't enough, there's Dire Bears, hags, and a host of other nasties just waiting for players in these enchanted woods.
Menace of the Underdark is focused almost entirely on new content for level-capped players ready to take on serious challenges and eventually take on the Spider Queen Lolth herself.
As DDO's first expansion, Menace of the Underdark is poised to provide content-hungry players with a feast fit for Drizzt himself when it launches on June 25, 2012.
