Thanks to the record-setting box office juggernaut ''The Hunger Games,'' online ticketing service Fandango reported a company-best first quarter, improving on last year's comparable period by a whopping 127% in ticket sales, as well as posting a 58% year-over-year monthly increase in online traffic, totaling 38 million users.
''This quarter is a significant milestone for Fandango, and shows the incredible momentum behind the company right now,'' said Fandango exec VP and general manager Rick Butler.
Fandango reported that it sold 22% of the $152 million opening weekend domestic take for ''Hunger Games,'' resulting in approximately 60,000 tickets sold per hour.
Aside from an increase in tickets sold, the company attributed its growth to an ''expanded exhibitor reach,'' boosted by recent deals with AMC and Regency Theaters that increased the site's theater network in the first quarter by 19%. Fandango also recently inked an exclusive partnership deal with Yahoo.
''Our unparalleled reach, product innovations and ability to guarantee seats for blockbusters like 'The Hunger Games,' are significant drivers of this success,'' Butler said. ''We are excited to start off the year from such a strong position, and to be adding tremendous value to our exhibitor and studio partners.''
