'Games' beats 'Titanic' this weekend, but hasn't reached level of other blockbusters.
Even the re-release of the classic Titanic in 3D could not topple this box office giant! E! Online reports that James Cameron's masterpiece could not end the winning streak made by The Hunger Games. However, Games still has a long way to go to earn as much as other block-busting movies.
Games earned $33.5 million while Titanic only earned $17.4 million during the weekend. It opened on Wednesday, which only raises the grand total up to $27.5 million domestically, still falling short of the total Games made in just one weekend. Many people believed that Titanic would be a good rival for Games, but it was blown out of the water.
Entering in its third weekend at the top, Games has earned $300 million domestically. Though it is climbing up the ladder, it is still behind other blockbusters, including Cameron's Avatar. Many people thought that Cameron's re-release of the tear-jerking Titanic could take on Games, but it failed to even beat American Reunion.
Perhaps audiences have to take into account that Titanic is a 14-year-old movie, but with the 100 year anniversary of Titanic this week along with 3D features, it seems it would attract more moviegoers.
American Reunion earned $21.5 million, which makes it the least successful film in the American Pie series. This is a good haul for a movie that was last in theaters in 1999.
However, if Games wants to go against the big times, it still has far to go. Globally, it has earned $460 million to date, while Titanic's grand total (from then and now) is $626.5 million.
With a few more weekends like this one, Titanic sure has competition in the long run!
