We had a chance to sit down with Hi-Rez Studios and Tribes: Ascend at PAX East 2012 to tackle the unreleased Capture and Hold mode. Tribes: Ascend is seriously fast, and we had to take a crash course in skiing before we strapped into a few different class loadouts and learned a wide range of weaponry.
We soon discovered how to move around Tribes: Ascend using skiing, frictionless movement that can be used to cruise around territory and better utilize the jetpack. We selected the Juggernaut preset loadout, wielding a sort of grenade launcher and an AOE blaster, and began clumsily trying to help the team "capture and hold" the three points on the map.
Tribes: Ascend feels faster than most shooters we've played, maybe even faster than the Unreal Tournament series. It is absolutely the spiritual successor to Tribes.
It took a few minutes of fumbling around and bumping into things, getting gibbed and fragged all over the place, but eventually we learned how to aim our secondary weapon at the ground under opponents, ensuring the AOE blast would at least graze enemies in the vicinity.
After around 10 minutes or so of learning how to jetpack and fire efficiently, we became semi-useful to the team and began laying down some frags. The goal of "Capture and Hold" is, not surprisingly, to capture and hold multiple locations around the map to get points rolling in.
This makes for constant action as each team rockets into uncontrolled locations guns blazing – we waited no more than a few seconds after a repop to ski back into a hotspot and rattle off some rounds. Achievements were earned during the match for various milestones.
Tribes: Ascend is free-to-play with optional in game "gold" purchases. Because of its F2P status, Tribes: Ascend is a must try for any FPS/Shooter fan.
