Live: Tight games on second full day of NCAA tournament - USA TODAY
Mar 16th 2012, 18:11

After the first Thursday of the NCAA tournament gave us a little less sizzle than some might have hoped for, there's a silver lining: we get to do it all over again today.

The NCAA tournament continues Friday with another loaded slate with 16 second-round matchups. Among the matchups early are Cincinnati vs. Texas (12:15 p.m. ET), N.C. State vs. San Diego State (12:40 p.m. ET) and, a little later, Georgetown vs. Belmont (3:10 p.m. ET).

THURSDAY MAYHEM:  Ugly chant, terrible buzzer beaters

Also in action are No. 1 seed Michigan State (vs. Long Island), second-seeded Missouri (vs. Norfolk State) and No. 1 seed North Carolina (vs. Vermont).

Stay tuned for updates throughout the afternoon's games, the first of which tips off at 12:15 p.m. ET.

***

2:25 p.m.: It's all over from Nashville. Cincinnati moves on to the third round with a 65-59 victory. Yancy Gates had 15 point and nine boards for the Bearcats, who will face the winner of Florida State-St. Bonaventure.

2:23 p.m.: Dion Dixon and Cashmere Wright each make a pair of free throws and it looks like Cincinnati will survive the comeback attempt by Texas. It's 64-59 with 14 seconds left and the Bearcats headed back to the free-throw line.

2:21 p.m.: A cold start for Florida. The Gators are just 1-of-8 from the field and trail Virginia 10-2 with 14:43 left in the first half.

2:19 p.m.: Both Cincinnati and Texas swap baskets and the Bearcats still lead by four. Longhorns use their last timeout with 38.3 seconds left. They need a turnover on the next possession or hope Cincy will miss free throws.

2:17 p.m.: Texas calls timeout after Clint Chapman scores to get the Longhorns within 58-54 of Cincinnati with 59.2 seconds remaining. Bearcats now need to take care of the ball and make free throws to put this one away.

2:15 p.m.: Yancy Gates scores the go-ahead basket then Cashmere Wright splits the Texas defense for a layup to put Cincinnati ahead 56-52 with just under two minutes left. Have the Longhorns used up all their energy in this furious comeback?

2:12 p.m.: Omaha is the last of the eight regions to tip off this tournament. Florida is facing Virginia in a battle of orange-clad schools.

Meanwhile, Texas has tied Cincinnati at 52 with 3:44 left. Bearcats call timeout.

2:08 p.m.: Two free throws by Clint Chapman have Texas now within one of Cincinnati after earlier trailing by 19 in the second half. As the Longhorns have heated up, the Bearcats have gone cold. Yancy Gates will go to the line to try to change the momentum after the media timeout with 3:57 left.

2:05 p.m.: No. 11 seed N.C. State still leading as it attempts to upset San Diego State. Richard Howell's jumper gives him 19 points and the Wolfpack a 47-40 margin with 14 minutes left.

2:01 p.m.: Jahenns Manigat hits a three to give Creighton back the lead against Alabama. Both teams are 6-of-16 from the field, but the Blue Jays are out front 16-15.

1:57 p.m.: And all of the sudden Texas is now within five of Cincinnati. Clint Chapman's dunk caps a 12-3 run to to bring the score to 49-44. The Bearcats call timeout with 7:35 left. All the momentum is on the side of the Longhorns.

1:54 p.m.: Texas finally has their deficit in single digits for the first time since midway through the first half. Julien Lewis' three cut's Cincinnati's advantage to 46-37 with 10 minutes left. Still plent of time for the Longhorns.

1:50 p.m.: Media timeout in Greensboro. Creighton and Alabama are knotted at 7 after six minutes.

About to get restarted in Columbus with N.C. State leading San Diego State 33-29.

1:46 p.m.: Texas crept a little closer to Cincinnati with consecutive threes by Sheldon McClellan. But the Bearcats respond with four points after calling a timeout to improve their lead to 44-30 with 11:56 left.

1:42 p.m.: The ball is in the air in Greensboro. Creighton's Antoine Young takes the first shot, a three-pointer, that is no good.

1:37 p.m.: Still a struggle for Texas to score. Longhorns with just four points through the first five minutes of the second half. Cincinnati leads 38-21 .

1:32 p.m.: It's halftime in Columbus with N.C. State ahead of San Diego State 33-29. Richard Howell leads all scorers with 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Chase Tapley, the second-leading scorer for the Aztecs, has been held scoreless.

1:28 p.m.: Back under way in Nashville. Cincinnati is out front 31-17 against Texas. Longhorns had a dreadful first half, shooting 4-27 from the field. That will have to change if they want to get back into it.

1:25 p.m.: DeShawn Painter's basket gives N.C. State its largest lead at 31-26 with 1:48 left in the half. San Diego State calls timeout. The Aztecs have gone more than four minutes without scoring.

1:20 p.m.: About 50 minutes away is the start of Virginia-Florida. The Gators got to the Elite Eight last year, while the Cavaliers make their first appearance since 2007.

1:14 p.m.: N.C. State goes ahead of San Diego State 27-26 on a bucket by Scott Wood with six minutes left in the half. It's been a tight game throughout. Largest lead is four by the Wolfpack early. James Franklin is leading the Aztecs with 10 points, including two three-pointers.

1:12 p.m.: About 30 minutes away from Creighton-Alabama from Greensboro. Blue Jays enter with a 28-5 record. The Crimson Tide are in the field for the first time since 2006.

1:08 p.m.: San Diego State and N.C. State are headed for the under-8 timeout in the first half and we're all tied at 22 after Richard Howell hits consecutive layups for the Wolfpack. Howell leads all scorers with 11 points.

1:04 p.m.: 31-17 Cincinnati lead at the half. Season-low first half for Texas, per CBS. No surprise here: Yancy Gates and Sean Kilpatrick are the Bearcats' leading scorers so far (eight points each).

1:00 p.m.: Literally the only thing not going well for Cincy is its foul trouble -- 11 fouls on the Bearcats with about two minutes left in the first half. Other than that, Cincy leads Texas 28-15. Out in Columbus, SDSU has grabbed an 18-16 lead on N.C. State.

12:51 p.m.: After a Yancy Gates basket makes it 20-6 Cincinnati, it's probably time to switch to N.C. State/San Diego State on TruTV. Wolfpack leads 11-9 about five minutes into the game. At least both teams are scoring in this one.

12:49 p.m.: Texas hit two free throws! The Longhorns double their score ... to 4.

12:43 p.m.: Texas really couldn't hit water if it fell out of a boat at this point. After two missed FTs by the Longhorns, they are now scoreless in nine minutes of game time. Cincinnati still leads 16-2.

12:41 p.m.: Texas hasn't scored in over 8 minutes. Cincinnati, however, is scoring. The score is now 16-2.

12:40 p.m.: Cincinnati comes out of the timeout with a missed shot and Texas looks to cut into the lead. The Longhorns miss a jumper and the score remains 13-2 with 10 minutes left in the first half.

12:36 p.m.: Coming out of the timeout, Texas still can't hit a shot. Luckily for them, Cincinnati hasn't added to the lead yet. Still 13-2 Bearcats as the game goes to another TV timeout.

12:32 p.m.: Texas finally calls a timeout at the 11:36 mark in the first half after Cincinnati added to its lead. Bearcats are up 13-2. Texas simply cannot hit a shot from the field.

12:31 p.m.: Texas still can't hit a shot as the Longhorns are now 1-of-12 from the field. Cincinnati up 11-2. 11:40 left in the first half.

12:28 p.m.: Still no score since our last update. Neither team is lighting it up -- and turnovers are aplenty so far. Texas misses another shot and finally Kilpatrick scores for Cincy to up the lead to 9-2.

12:23 p.m.: Cincinnati is now 3-of-6 from the field and Texas has been sloppy with the ball early, helping the Bearcats open up a 7-2 lead at the first TV timeout of the game.

12:20 p.m.: Kilpatrick hits one of two FTs. Cincinnati takes an early 1-0 lead, then scores a layup off a steal. Cincy up 3-0.

12:19 p.m. Slow start for both teams. More than a minute of half of action and still no score. But a foul on Texas gives Cincy two shots from the free throw line for Sean Kilpatrick.

12:17 p.m.: The Cincinnati Bearcats and the Texas Longhorns have tipped off in their second-round game in Nashville.
