Dismissing HBO movie 'Game Change', Sen. John McCain remains 'proud' Sarah ... - New York Daily News

Sen. John McCain wants HBO's Game Change - a scathing take on McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his 2008 running mate - to just fade away.

The former Republican Presidential candidate said he didn't even bother to watch the HBO movie Saturday night.

"I watched the Phoenix Coyotes beat the San Jose Sharks three to nothing. It was a great game," McCain stiffly told Fox News Sunday.

Though he didn't watch the movie, he said it was nothing but a hack job drawn from unnamed sources and that he had nothing but respect for Palin — then and now.

"I admire and respect her. I'm proud of our campaign, I'm grateful that she ran with me and I will always be proud of what we did," McCain said.

Actress Julianne Moore won kudos for what critics called her eerily on-target portrayal of Vice President hopeful Palin.

Drawn from the best-selling book by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, the movie portrayed Palin as something of an idiot savant - ignorant of the basics in history or world politics, but brilliant in her ability to connect and rally a crowd.

McCain, though, doesn't come out unscathed. He's portrayed as a man willing to play politics in the crunch.

His character, played by actor Ed Harris, is told he can't win election with any of the qualified VP candidates he might choose — Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, even New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

"We desperately need a game-changing pick, and none of these middle-aged white guys are game changers," said actor Woody Harrelson, playing McCain's campaign manager Steve Schmidt.

"So find me a woman," the candidate replies in the film.

"Did that ever happen?" Fox News' Chris Wallace asked McCain after playing him the clip.

"Of course not," McCain responded.

Schmidt, though, when asked about the truth of the movie, has said it was spot-on, and that his one of his regrets from his time as campaign manager was recommending someone as a vice presidential candidate who was not up for the job.

"I would regret he would make such statement," McCain said grimly.
