The Notre Dame Fighting Irish may be known for their football, but tonight their basketball team faces off with the Louisville Cardinals at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York for the right to play in the Big East Championship game on Saturday.  The World's Most Famous Arena hosts the game between the Cardinals and Fighting Irish at 9:30 PM tonight.

You can watch all the action between the Irish and Cardinals live online here. Also, here is some video of a previous meeting between the two teams:

Here's more on the game between the Irish and the Cardinals:

Both Notre Dame and Louisville have more than locked up their bids for the NCAA tournament thanks to superlative regular seasons that left them standing as some of the best teams in the country. Still, with both squads looking at between a five and seven seed right now, this game is an important one.

The NCAA tournament starts on Tuesday of next week with preliminary games in Dayton, Ohio. The real tournament starts on Thursday at lunch time. The top seeds in the NCAA tournament are likely to be Syracuse, Kentucky, North Carolina and Kansas.

The winner will advance to the semi-finals on Saturday.

Here's more on the Louisville – Notre Dame matchup from the Kansas City Star:

The seventh-seeded Louisville Cardinals will attempt to deny the Notre Dame Fighting Irish a spot in the championship game for the second year in a row when the two teams square off in the semifinal round of the 2012 Big East Conference Tournament tonight at Madison Square Garden.

If history repeats itself, this one will not be over after 40 minutes of action. Louisville and Notre Dame's bouts have gone into overtime in five of their last six meetings. The Cardinals outlasted Notre Dame to pick up an 83-77 victory when these programs met in last season's semifinal round. Then the Fighting Irish returned the favor on Jan. 7 by defeating Louisville, 67-65, in double-overtime at the KFC Yum! Center. Notre Dame managed to win the regular season bout despite shooting 31.7 percent from the floor and making only 5-of-26 from three-point range, by converting 22-of-29 at the charity stripe. Louisville shot 42.3 percent from the field, but missed 10 of its 27 free throws in their loss to Notre Dame.
