Companies like Blizzard have been fighting for years to stop people paying real-world money for in-game items. But Eve Online developer CCP has decided to reverse that transaction and offer real world items for in-game currency.
A deal has been signed with Nvidia to allow Eve Online players to use Pilot License Extension (PLEX) currency to purchase a real graphics card for use in their PCs. PLEX can already be used to buy game time, and it must be purchased in-game through the main Eve currency: ISK.
It's a clever move, and one that should see more players spending more time in the game earning ISK to convert to PLEX to get the card. At the moment it's just an experiment with 100 Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 cards up for grabs. If successful, CCP will look to expand the offer.
Each card is worth around $200, with the price of PLEX already shooting up within Eve since the announcement. CCP has also had the foresight to limit the offer to one car per account so as to stop any cash-rich account holders grabbing several and reselling the cards to make some real money.
Maybe in the future we'll see CCP expand the offer to other hardware components so that ultimately gamers can play in order to fund a new PC. For now, it might be the perfect opportunity for existing Eve players to pick up a new card for no (real) money at all. New players thinking of signing up to earn enough for the card will have many long nights of playing ahead of them.
